Qi Gong and The Eight Brocades

Qi Gong (QiGong or Chi'i Kong) is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine and is used as a preventative measure as well as a remedy for specific conditions. Its aim is to increase the body's life force (qi) and to improve its circulation throughout the system. Traditional Chinese Medicine believes that sickness is the result of interrupted, weak or blocked flow of Qi. The aim of Qi Gong is to promote personal energy for self-healing and well being.

The Eight Brocades is a series of easy Qi Gong exercises which coordinate the breath with simple movements. It dates back as far as 2,000 ago. These exercises have been used by both warriors and monks for health and meditation purposes they are also used as warm-ups for Tai Chi.

These eight exercises are used to stimulate the central nervous system, lower blood pressure, relieve stress and gently tone muscles without strain. They also enhance digestion, elimination of wastes and the the circulation of blood.

Making beneficial exercises interesting and enjoyable has always been a challenge to creative people. Hua T'o (110-207 CE) was one of the famous physicians of the Han Dynasty. In The History of the Later Han, Hua T'o wrote:

"Man's body must have exercise, but it should never be done to the point of exhaustion. By moving about briskly, digestion is improved, the blood vessels are opened, and illnesses are prevented. It is like a used doorstep which never rots."

There are many styles of Qi Gong, however the Eight Brocades is arguably the most popular Qi Gong exercise set now practiced around the world. Depending upon how many repetitions the student does, the Eight Brocades can be done in as little time as five minutes or as long as thirty minutes. The student can vary the length of the set depending upon how he is feeling.
